Congratulations 8th Grade Bands –

Congratulations to our 8th Grade Bands. On Thursday, Dec. 20 the 8th grade band joined the BMS Choir to present a convocation to the BMS student body in Schafer Auditorium. It was a treat to perform some Christmas favorites before heading out the doors to start our Christmas Break. The band and choir did a great job. A big thank you goes out to our faculty and administration for making the afternoon possible.

ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Lessons Have Started –

Some of our 7th and 8th grade band members have signed up for the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. It will be held at Bloomington North HS on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. This is not a required event. It will involve extra practice time and lessons so students need to give this some serious thought before committing. The deadline was Nov. 27 to return fees. See added page to this website for more information.

I will be available Thurs. (1-3), Fri. (1-4) after school until 4:00 to help students with music.

Indiana University Young Winds –

The 2012 Indiana University Young Winds program is about to begin and our students are invited to participate. It is a program designed for middle school instrumental students as a supplement to the instruction they receive in school. The program focuses on small-group lessons as well as a full band experience for students surrounding the Bloomington campus. It is a wonderful program. Many of our students have participated over the years and my son has been in the program. I can’t speak highly enough about this opportunity and the benefits of participating.

The classes meet on Saturday mornings from 9:00 – 11:00 in the Musical Arts Center (MAC) on the IU Campus. The first class is on Jan. 26 and continue until April 20. More information is available in the band building and at www.music.indiana.edu/precollege/year-round/wind/index.shtml . The program has a $75 fee.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Congratulations to Our Beginning Band Students –

I would like to congratulate our beginning band students on a great concert performance. I was very proud and pleased with the effort and the tremendous showing we had in the audience. The first concert for the beginners is so exciting for the performers and it is a chance for me to meet so many great parents and share information about the program here at BMS.

Christmas Music Presentation –

Broadview Bowl Party for the BMS Bands on Dec. 7 –

On December 7th the BMS Band Department will go bowling at Broadview Bowl in Bedford from 4 pm to 6 pm. It will be a load of fun and a great time for the band kids to enjoy themselves after a semester of hard work. The bands have done a tremendous job this year and I am very proud of them.

Parents can drop students off at Broadview Bowl at 4 pm and pick them up at 6 pm. The cost is free for students that sold the fall fundraiser (and turned in the money). Students that didn’t participate in a fundraiser just need to pay $5 that evening. The cost will include shoes and bowling balls. The students need to remember to wear or bring socks and that all school rules are in effect. Students may also want to bring money to purchase drinks at the concession counter and for any video games they may want to play.

6th Grade Beginning Band Concert Dec. 10 –

The 6th grade bands will present a concert on Monday, Dec. 10 in Schafer Auditorium at BMS. The students should arrive at 6:30 and report to the stage in Schafer Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:00 and there is no admission fee charged for the concert. The students should try to look nice. Most of the guys will wear a nice shirt or sweater with dress pants or a nice pair of jeans. The girls usually wear a nice outfit or dress.

The kids are really fired up about this first concert. The brass, woodwinds and percussion will all be featured. I’m very excited with the progress and enjoy working with the band every morning.

BMS Band participated in the Annual L.I.F.E. Christmas Fantasia –

The BMS Band Department was excited to participate in the 20th Annual LIFE Christmas Fantasia. We had some wonderful help from 8th grade band volunteers and the tree turned out great. Mrs. Cook did a terrific job bringing all the supplies and tree together and the band students put some creative energy and thought into decorating the tree.

A big thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Werley for purchasing the tree during the auction for the Golden Corral. Make sure to stop by and see the tree at Golden Corral when you celebrate the Christmas Season.

L.I.F.E raised over $20.000 to help our community at this year’s event.

Dumon Strong Night on Dec. 11 –

Tuesday, December 11 will be “Dumon Strong Night” at the BMS Basketball Game vs Batchelor MS. Here is a note sent out by Mr. Schlegel explaining the evening. Dumon is a wonderful student and this night will be a big help to Dumon and his family.

Greetings,

As many of you are aware, Dumon McCain, a 7th grader here at BMS, is dealing with some serious health issues.  Dumon has a brain tumor and is undergoing vigorous treatment at this time.  Several inquiries have been made by parents, students and community members about ways to help the family.  I am pleased to announce that on the evening of December 11, during the BMS boys basketball game versus Batchelor Middle School we will host a Dumon McCain Night.

Various fund-raising activities will take place during the games, some details are still being worked out.  One activity that will take place is a prize raffle drawing.  At various times throughout the evening we will draw names of winners who have purchased raffle tickets.  Winners will receive BMS and donated items.  If anyone would like to donate items to be given away during this event, feel free to contact Missy.

All fundraising proceeds will to the McCain family to offset expenses associated with Dumon’s condition.

I look forward to this event and the opportunity to help the McCains.

 Go Cutters!

I hope all our students and families are enjoying this special Christmas time of the year. One of the many traits we stress in band is helping each other reach goals. This time of the year the students have so many opportunities to see this happening all around them. Have a great week, and I hope to see you all soon.

The event will be on Saturday, December 1st at Parkview School’s Gym. The fantasia will feature trees, wreaths, centerpieces, and other Christmas items designed by individuals and groups from all around the area. The event will begin Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. and the auction will start at 12:00. Every Day is Thanksgiving

This time of the year is a great time to reflect on everything we are so thankful for. I do this every morning as the school day begins. I love my job and working with the band students at BMS. I am thankful for the opportunity to see them ever day and a smile comes across my face every time I think of them.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

6th Grade Bands –

The 6th grade bands are off to a good start. The kids have settled in and are preparing for the concert on December 10. We are in a phase where some pick it up right away and some struggle a bit. It is natural for some of the kids to get frustrated over the next few weeks as anticipation for the concert intensifies. Just remind them to take it slow and they will work it all out. They want it all to happen right now. That will be the case for a few, but most will struggle. Just be as supportive as you can and they will begin to figure it out and be fine.

The students that aren’t using a school instrument should be locating an instrument to play on. There are links to Paige’s Music and Melody Music Shop on our website. Both companies are good choices for locating an instrument to rent or buy.

Some percussionists still need to buy a stick bag with the appropriate sticks and mallets to use for class. We have the stick bags with what the percussionists need in the band office to make this easy for them. The stick bags with the sticks and mallets will cost $55 again this year. They will also need to have something to practice bell parts on at home. A bell kit, piano, or little electric keyboard work well for this.

All the students will need a beginning band book. We use Essential Elements 2000. Most students that rented from Paige’s Music already have this and others may too. The percussion book includes the snare and bell music and costs $16. The rest of the band books are $9. The students that still need a book can purchase it from the band office.

Cookie Dough Sale In The Final Phase –

The collected money is starting to come in and the results are good. We want to try to deliver the products as soon as we can and return the money collected after the orders have been delivered. Checks can be made out to BMS Bands. We will do the cash prizes after all the money has been collected and turned in. We don’t have a set date for money return, but we want to try to wrap it all up by November if possible.

It was a great sale and we want to finish strong by getting everything turned in. Thanks again for all the support and time.

7th and 8th Grade Fall Concert Nov. 1 –

The 7th and 8th grade bands will present a fall concert on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Schafer Auditorium at BMS. Both bands will play the same night since election day falls on the traditional 8th grade concert date. Hopefully by staggering the band performances we can help with the limited parking and seating. This worked out well last spring. As always, there aren’t any admission fees for BMS Band Concerts

The 7th grade members should meet on the auditorium stage at 6:15 to warm-up. The 7th grade band will perform at 6:30 and play for about 30 minutes. The 7th graders are free to leave at that point so we can open up seats in the auditorium for 8th grade. 7th grade is welcome to stay, but not required.

The 8th grade members should meet on stage at 7:2o to warm-up. The 8th grade will play at 7:30 if all goes well with the transition. They will also play for about 30 minutes.

The band members should try to look nice for this event if it is possible. Guys can wear nice jeans and a nice shirt, or dress pants and a nice shirt. The ladies have the same options or could choose to wear a nice dress or outfit.

The kids have been working hard and are doing a nice job in class. They have improved quite a bit since August. I’m always amazed at how far they come from the first day they try to play something to the concert performance. We have a wonderful facility to perform in and it is quite a special night for the kids. Concerts are part of the student’s grade and students are required to participate as part of the learning experience.

The 6th grade bands will present a concert on Monday, Dec. 10 in Schafer Auditorium at BMS.

Cookie Dough Arrived Oct. 9, 2012 –

The cookie dough is out to be delivered. We had a few orders packed with some errors, but the vast majority were correct. Most issues involved the chocolate chunk products. I guess the person on that part of the packing line must have been having a bad day.

It was great seeing so many parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends at the cookie dough pick-up. One thing I miss from being a high school director is that I don’t get to see and spend as much time with our band parents and families.
