Broadview Bowl Party for the BMS Bands on Dec. 7 –

On December 7th the BMS Band Department will go bowling at Broadview Bowl in Bedford from 4 pm to 6 pm. It will be a load of fun and a great time for the band kids to enjoy themselves after a semester of hard work. The bands have done a tremendous job this year and I am very proud of them.

Parents can drop students off at Broadview Bowl at 4 pm and pick them up at 6 pm. The cost is free for students that sold the fall fundraiser (and turned in the money). Students that didn’t participate in a fundraiser just need to pay $5 that evening. The cost will include shoes and bowling balls. The students need to remember to wear or bring socks and that all school rules are in effect. Students may also want to bring money to purchase drinks at the concession counter and for any video games they may want to play.

6th Grade Beginning Band Concert Dec. 10 –

The 6th grade bands will present a concert on Monday, Dec. 10 in Schafer Auditorium at BMS. The students should arrive at 6:30 and report to the stage in Schafer Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:00 and there is no admission fee charged for the concert. The students should try to look nice. Most of the guys will wear a nice shirt or sweater with dress pants or a nice pair of jeans. The girls usually wear a nice outfit or dress.

The kids are really fired up about this first concert. The brass, woodwinds and percussion will all be featured. I’m very excited with the progress and enjoy working with the band every morning.

BMS Band participated in the Annual L.I.F.E. Christmas Fantasia –

The BMS Band Department was excited to participate in the 20th Annual LIFE Christmas Fantasia. We had some wonderful help from 8th grade band volunteers and the tree turned out great. Mrs. Cook did a terrific job bringing all the supplies and tree together and the band students put some creative energy and thought into decorating the tree.

A big thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Werley for purchasing the tree during the auction for the Golden Corral. Make sure to stop by and see the tree at Golden Corral when you celebrate the Christmas Season.

L.I.F.E raised over $20.000 to help our community at this year’s event.

ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Lessons Begin Dec. 11 –

Some of our 7th and 8th grade band members have signed up for the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. It will be held at Bloomington North HS on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. This is not a required event. It will involve extra practice time and lessons so students need to give this some serious thought before committing. The deadline was Nov. 27 to return fees. See added page to this website for more information.

I will be available Tues (12-11), Wed. (12-12), Thurs. (12-13) after school until 4:00 to help students pick out solos.

Dumon Strong Night on Dec. 11 –

Tuesday, December 11 will be “Dumon Strong Night” at the BMS Basketball Game vs Batchelor MS. Here is a note sent out by Mr. Schlegel explaining the evening. Dumon is a wonderful student and this night will be a big help to Dumon and his family.

Greetings,

As many of you are aware, Dumon McCain, a 7th grader here at BMS, is dealing with some serious health issues.  Dumon has a brain tumor and is undergoing vigorous treatment at this time.  Several inquiries have been made by parents, students and community members about ways to help the family.  I am pleased to announce that on the evening of December 11, during the BMS boys basketball game versus Batchelor Middle School we will host a Dumon McCain Night.

Various fund-raising activities will take place during the games, some details are still being worked out.  One activity that will take place is a prize raffle drawing.  At various times throughout the evening we will draw names of winners who have purchased raffle tickets.  Winners will receive BMS and donated items.  If anyone would like to donate items to be given away during this event, feel free to contact Missy.

All fundraising proceeds will to the McCain family to offset expenses associated with Dumon’s condition.

I look forward to this event and the opportunity to help the McCains.

 Go Cutters!

Indiana University Young Winds –

The 2012 Indiana University Young Winds program is about to begin and our students are invited to participate. It is a program designed for middle school instrumental students as a supplement to the instruction they receive in school. The program focuses on small-group lessons as well as a full band experience for students surrounding the Bloomington campus. It is a wonderful program. Many of our students have participated over the years and my son has been in the program. I can’t speak highly enough about this opportunity and the benefits of participating.

The classes meet on Saturday mornings from 9:00 – 11:00 in the Musical Arts Center (MAC) on the IU Campus. The first class is on Jan. 26 and continue until April 20. More information is available in the band building and at www.music.indiana.edu/precollege/year-round/wind/index.shtml . The program has a $75 fee.

In Closing

I hope all our students and families are enjoying this special Christmas time of the year. One of the many traits we stress in band is helping each other reach goals. This time of the year the students have so many opportunities to see this happening all around them. Have a great week, and I hope to see you all soon.

Have a great week!
