Fall Fundraiser Order Forms Due –

The sales portion of the band fundraiser has come to an end. The forms have been collected, and the order has been placed. It has been a great sale and we surpassed last year’s total by over 300 tubs of cookie dough. I can’t begin to express how appreciative I am of all the help and humbled by all the support shown to our kids and the program. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am thankful to be in such a great school system and surrounded by a caring community and thoughtful students.

Fall Fundraiser Ends Sept. 16 –

This year’s fall fundraiser began on September 3rd. I really appreciate all the help with this project. The profits enable us to sell supplies and equipment below cost to the students. We also use profits to lower trip costs, so students that participate in fundraisers receive discounts on local band trips.

The forms are due on September 16 and the cookie dough will be delivered during the week of Oct 6. We are just taking orders now and the money will be collected when the cookie dough is delivered. Checks will be made out to BMS Bands.

Congratulations to the Marching Stars –

Congratulations to the Stars on a great 2nd place finish at a tough show in Columbus last weekend. Good luck at Martinsville and keep up the good work.

Washington DC Information –

Be on the look out next week for information on the 7th / 8th trip to Washington DC. We have received the updated packet and will be passing it along. The initial $50 deposit is due Oct. 15.

6th Grade Books and Percussion Stick bags are in –

The band department has the needed stick bags for our percussionists. The stick bags with the sticks and mallets cost $55. Many of the percussionists have already brought money to purchase these. They will also need to have something to practice bell parts on at home. A bell kit, piano, iPad app, or little electric keyboard work well for this.

All the students will need a beginning band book. We use Essential Elements 2000. Most students that rented from Paige’s Music already have this and others may too. The percussion book includes the snare and bell music and costs $16. The rest of the band books are $9. The students that need a book can purchase it from the band office. We will begin using books in class next week.

Checks can be made out to BMS Band.

Fall Fundraiser Has Started –

This year’s fall fundraiser began on September 3rd. Last year’s sale was just incredible and the profits really helped the program grow. e don’t expect the students to go out and sell a lot or be aggressive in taking orders. We are large enough that a few orders from everyone will more than meet our needs. I really appreciate any help at all with this project. From personal experience, I know it is a tough time and some households may have another fundraiser happening with a sibling.

Good Luck to the Marching Stars –

We want to wish our BNL Marching Stars the best of luck as they travel to the first competition of the season. They have been working hard and Mr. Jones has them focused and ready to go. The Stars will be competing at Columbus North HS in one of the largest competitions in the state this weekend.

Progress Reports Issued Next Week –

Next week the first round of progress reports will be sent home. The band class is a pass/fail class so parents are looking for a “P” on the band grade. Many of our students are not allowed to take instruments home so we have adopted the pass/fail method for the class grade to accommodate this fact.  We will have a few students receive an “N” for “no grade” due to not having an instrument yet. Students that receive an “N” can make up the work once they get an instrument.

The conduct grade is based on class behavior and will show up as a number (029, 030, 031). All the students are allowed to attend class and know what is expected of them when it comes to participating and behaving. The range for an Average Conduct grade (030) is zero to ten violations of class rules over the nine week grading period.

The progress reports depict where students are at halfway so the cutoff is 5 to measure the midway point. This shows they could be headed toward Poor Conduct (031), or worse if the current behavior trend continues. If behavior improves and they stay below ten violations for the 9 week period an Average Conduct (030) can still be earned.

Outstanding Conduct (029) is given out very sparingly. A student needs to demonstrate conduct above and beyond the class expectation consistently to achieve Outstanding Conduct (029).

6th Grade Books and Percussion Stick bags are in –

The band department has the stick bags percussionists need for class. Last year the stick bags with the sticks and mallets cost $55 and we are able to keep the same price this year.

Continue to vote for the Holiday Drive-in until Sept. 9 –

I have gone to the drive-in movies every summer for as long as I can remember. I have enjoyed our local theater south of Mitchell and have seen many of our band students and band families enjoying it too. This year the film companies are switching all movies to a digital format.  This change is requiring theaters to make a costly change to equipment that most drive-ins can’t afford. The Holiday Drive-in has an opportunity to receive the necessary equipment at no cost from a Honda promotion. I have included some information here from Mr. Wilson and hope we can help keep a drive-in theater here in Lawrence County for years to come.

Here is some information I received from Steve Wilson. Steve is the current owner of the Holiday Drive-in here in Lawrence County.

6th Grade Bands –

The 6th grade bands took another great step this week. Today was the first day to sit down and have them all get instruments out at the same time. Needless to say the excitement in the room was incredible.

The students that aren’t using a school instrument should be locating an instrument to play on. There are links to Paige’s Music and Melody Music Shop on our website. Both companies are good choices for locating an instrument to rent or buy. Both companies seem to have plenty of inventory.

The percussionists have been selected and will need to buy a stick bag with the appropriate sticks and mallets to use for class. The band department will order these stick bags with what the percussionists need to make it easy for them. Last year the stick bags with the sticks and mallets cost $55 and we are able to keep the price the same this year. They will also need to have something to practice bell parts on at home. A bell kit, piano, iPad app, or little electric keyboard work well for this. Stick bags continue to arrive from our supplier. As of today we still have 3 in stock here at BMS. More are on the way.

All the students will need a beginning band book. We use Essential Elements 2000. Most students that rented from Paige’s Music already have this and others may too. The percussion book includes the snare and bell music and costs $16. The rest of the band books are $9. The students that need a book can purchase it from the band office in the next couple of weeks as the books arrive.

Checks can be made out to BMS Band.

6th Grade Bands –

The 6th grade bands are off to a good start. The woodwind and brass members have settled on an instrument choice and the percussionists have finished the audition process. Voice Mail –

The school has new voice mail and I am excited to have this great tool. I am sad to report the band voice mail hasn’t worked yet. The phone techs are working hard to fix it and it will be up and running soon. Always feel free to drop me an email or even drop by any time. I always enjoy seeing our parents.

Have a great week!

Welcome Back –

I can’t believe another summer has passed by and the school year is upon us. I have missed the band kids and I am so happy to see them returning for another great year here at BMS. Mr. Battaglia and Mr. Lackey retired last spring and are enjoying retirement. Due to these retirements we have some new faces working with the bands this year. Mr. Rumsey will be helping with our beginning bands and Mr. Jones will also drop in from time to time to work with the BMS bands. I would like to welcome both of these great teachers to our BMS family and also welcome our awesome beginning 6th graders.

Paige’s Instrument Display Aug. 15th –

Paige’s Music will be at Oolitic MS on Thursday, August 15th from 6:00 – 7:30 to rent instruments to NLCS band students. Our 4th period woodwinds have worked well together and are all set and have balanced out the instrumentation. The 5th period brass are still working on instrumentation. We were at 34 of 65 wanting to play trumpet. Needless to say that wouldn’t set the foundation for a very successful group. I pointed out the school provides trombones and baritones for free and some of the kids switched over. We still have a way to go with the brass, but they are closer.

Bands starting to play –

The 7th and 8th grade bands have started to play. Friday was the first day to get the instruments out and practice a little bit. Next week the 7th and 8th grade bands will be in full swing. The 6th grade bands are in the process of setting instrumentation and preparing to play. The woodwind class has instrumentation set and the brass are getting closer. 6th grade percussion start auditions next week.

Short week –

This has been a short week for the band and this will be a short update too. I can’t express how happy I am to see everyone and how excited I am about this group of kids and the year they will have. The sky is the limit and Mr. Schlegel has set the goal of “Expect the Best.” I couldn’t agree with him more.

Have a great week!

BNL Bands Launch New Website –

The BNL Bands have launched a new and exciting website. BNL band members and parents can find the latest information on the BNL Band Program. Marching Band members can find links to the music they will be playing in this summer’s 4th of July Parade. Incoming freshman are asked to click the downloads link to access the fight song and parade music. This will give you a head start on rehearsals later this summer. Here is a link to the new website https://sites.google.com/site/bnlmarchingstarsorg/home.

Washington D.C. Trip Approved –

I am so excited to announce the Washington D.C. trip for spring break 2014 was approved. This trip will involve the 2013 – 14 7th and 8th grade band members. We will have an informational meeting when we return in the fall. Get a jump on the event and start saving a little money this summer. The 2012 trip was a great success and I look forward to a wonderful trip next spring.

Elementary School Visits Have Wrapped Up –

I enjoyed visiting our elementary schools and talking to the 5th graders. It was a great time to talk about signing up for band and I’ve had the chance to show them some of the band instruments and talk about our program. Here is a link to the beginning band sign up form: https://bedfordmsband.com/beginning-band-sign-up-info?.  Here is a link to our beginning band brochure: http://www.nlcs.k12.in.us/bedjrhi/Band/BMS%20Band%20Brochure%202012.13.pdf. We have a lot to offer here at BMS and the band program is a great way to get involved in our school. I also received a helpful link to information about selecting instruments and locating instruments. Here is that link http://conn-selmer.com/en-us/parents/. These forms can still be dropped off at the BMS office.

Year End Instrument Thoughts –

Paige’s customers may want to send the instrument in for maintenance and cleaning. If you have the maintenance agreement it is a free service. You can call Paige’s at 1-800-337-0471 to arrange an instrument pick-up, ask any questions or request a loaner. Paige’s can then ship the instrument back to you or deliver it to BNL or BMS.

Some that rented at Melody Music in Bloomington for the school year may have a return date coming up soon.

School instruments will be sent in for cleaning and maintenance over the summer.

All instruments that are not school instruments need to be taken home for the summer. It will be a good idea to get them out every few weeks to keep valves and slides moving.

Thanks for a great year!

I can’t believe another school year has come and gone. It was a terrific year and a lot of milestones were reached and goals were achieved. I am so proud of our students and so grateful to our parents, friends, neighbors, and supporters. I am surely blessed to have the chance to work with the BMS students each and every day. Good luck to our outgoing 8th graders. You will truly become the stars that make us proud. I also look forward to seeing our 6th and 7th grade return a summer older and can’t wait to welcome another fantastic group of 5th graders into our BMS Band family. Have a wonderful summer and know that a day won’t go by that I don’t think of you and look forward to the memorable year we will have together in 2013-14.

Have a great summer!

Washington D.C. Trip Approved –

I am so excited to announce the Washington D.C. trip for spring break 2014 was approved last night. This trip will involve the 2013 – 14 7th and 8th grade band members. I’ll be discussing this in class next week and more information will follow. The 2012 trip was a great success and I look forward to another great trip next spring.

Congratulations to Sabrina West –

Congratulations to Sabrina for receiving the 2012-13 Director’s Award for the BMS Band. This award is given out to just one BMS 8th grade band student. You did a tremendous job this year and represented all that is good in a BMS Band student.

8th Grade Period 5 Wins Last Rehearsal Challenge –

The 5th Period 8th Grade Band held on to win the last rehearsal challenge of the school year. The 7th and 8th grade bands earn points for group work ethic, concentration and effort. Individual tardiness, talking and lack of effort lower the ensemble’s daily score. Here are the results:

Period 4 8th Grade Band: 57 points

Period 5 8th Grade Band: 54 points

Period 6 7th Grade Band: 39 points

Period 7 7th Grade Band: 24 points

After School Lessons –

I have been available many days after school for free lessons. I have had several students take advantage of these lessons and I have enjoyed teaching the lessons and watching the students improve over the course of the year. Next week I’ll be involved in year-end activities, so lessons won’t be available. Check back next fall after marching season for when lessons will begin again. Have a great summer!

Have a great week!
