Congratulations 6th Grade Band –

Congratulations to our 6th grade band students on an awesome concert. I am very proud of our 6th grade and couldn’t be happier with the effort shown. A big thank you goes out to the large crowd on hand to show support for our students and program. It was a wonderful evening.

IBA Honor Band to perform Nov. 24 –

The IBA All-Region Honor Band will rehearse and perform in Jasper this weekend. Good luck to Sam Bair (clarinet), Corbin Bushey (percussion), Calab Long (trombone), Sarah Lowery (French horn), Zachary Maudlin (French Horn), Nick Scherschel (trumpet). You will represent our program very well this weekend.

BNL Band Concert –

I was very excited to hear the BNL Concert Bands play a concert at the PAC after our 6th Grade Band concert at Schafer Auditorium. The BNL bands sounded great and I was happy to see so many of our BMS alumni still playing in the bands. Mr. Gales and Mr. Jones both do terrific jobs with the bands and are such good examples for the kids to follow. I hope all of our BMS students will continue playing when they reach BNL.

Indiana University Young Winds –

The 2014 Indiana University Young Winds program begins in Feb. and our students are invited to participate. It is a program designed for middle school instrumental students as a supplement to the instruction they receive in school. The program focuses on small-group lessons as well as a full band experience for students surrounding the Bloomington campus. It is a wonderful program. Many of our students have participated over the years. I can’t speak highly enough about this opportunity and the benefits of participating. More information is available in the band building and at www.music.indiana.edu/precollege/year-round/wind/. The program meets on Saturday mornings this spring and has a $75 fee.

Cookie Dough Money Due –

The cookie dough fundraiser has come to an end and the money is now past due. The sale was a huge success, but now we have the job of collecting all the money. Thank you to all that helped with this project.

ISSMA Solo and Ensemble –

It is time for our 7th and 8th grade band members to sign up for the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. It will be held at Bloomington North HS on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014. It is a very effective and rewarding experience for band students to participate in. More information is available at the band office for those interested. This is not a required event. It will involve extra practice time and lessons so students need to give this some serious thought before committing. We do have a deadline of Dec. 4 to return fees. See added page to this website for more information.

6th Grade Brass & Percussion Step-up –

The 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands earn points for group work ethic, concentration and effort. Individual tardiness, talking and lack of effort lower the ensemble’s daily score. The second round was won by the fifth period 6th grade brass and percussion. Here are the final results:

Period 1 8th Grade Band: 41 points

Period 2 8th Grade Band: 23 points

Period 4 6th Grade Band: 33 points

Period 5 6th Grade Band: 45 points

Period 6 7th Grade Band: 24 points

Period 7 7th Grade Band: 20 points

Every Day is Thanksgiving –

This time of the year is a great time to reflect on everything we are so thankful for. I do this every morning as the school day begins. I love my job and working with the band students at BMS. I am thankful for the opportunity to see them every day and a smile comes across my face every time I think of them.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
